Roadside Emergencies: Four Steps To Take If You Get Stranded At Night

Posted on: 19 June 2018

Roadside emergencies can be frustrating, scary, and even hazardous. Having your car break down at night can be particularly dangerous, especially if you are stranded on a dark or rural road. Knowing what to do to stay safe while you wait for help is essential in this type of situation. Here are some things you can do to stay safe during a nighttime roadside emergency while you wait for 24 hour emergency towing.

Make Your Car Visible

One danger during a nighttime road emergency is the lack of visibility. Dark conditions and a dark car can make it difficult for other motorists to see you, and this can lead to a car accident. If your car's battery will allow, turn on your four-way flashers to make your car easier to spot for other drivers and for your 24-hour towing service. In the event that your flashers don't work, use reflective signs or flares. It's a good idea to keep these items in your trunk just in case you experience car troubles.

Remain In The Vehicle

As long as it is safe to do so, remain inside the vehicle. Other drivers might not see you as you walk around the car to try to change a flat tire or make repairs under the hood. Remaining inside the vehicle also means you can keep the doors locked should a questionable person approach your vehicle. If you must remain outside of the vehicle, stay on the side opposite the road, and wear a reflective vest or jacket. This is another item you should keep in your trunk just in case your car breaks down. If you don't have a vest, look for an item of bright clothing inside your car, such as a scarf, that you can wear while outside.

Contact Local Authorities

While your roadside emergency doesn't necessarily require the help of the police, it is a good idea to contact the non-emergency number for the local police department. Alerting the police to your vehicle's presence on the road can make it easier for them to assess the situation should a patrol car come across your vehicle. In some cases, the police can even provide assistance, such as a ride to the station while you wait on your towing company. If your vehicle is disabled due to an accident, you'll want to contact the police so you can file a report.

Keep Your Cellphone On

Your cellphone should remain on while you wait, as this is the method of communication your towing company will use when trying to locate you. Avoid playing games or using social media while you wait, as these apps may drain your phone's battery. Keep busy with a book or crossword puzzle while you wait. If your car's battery is still operable, keep your phone plugged into a charger so you can be sure you have the battery life needed to make emergency calls.

Understanding Different Auto Problems

Few things are more frustrating than dealing with a car that is always having problems. I started carefully considering my own car issues a few years ago, and it felt like I was never going to get to the bottom of things. Fortunately, a friend of mine who is great with cars kind of took me under his wing and helped me to identify some problems. He talked with me about everything from getting regular maintenance to improving the overall look and feel of the inside of the car. I wanted to do something to help other people the way he helped me, so I started up this website.
