Are Refurbished Truck Parts Ever a Good Idea?
Posted on: 23 October 2019
Vehicle parts are one category where the word "used" isn't always expected. For new truck owners who are used to getting new parts in their cars, the idea of using a used or refurbished truck part may seem odd. However, there are times when a used part is generally fine and can save you some money. The purpose of the part, the general integrity of the part, and how much you trust the seller all come into play.
Refurbished Parts Are Okay if They're Not Safety-Related
It's better to use new parts for safety-related items. Not only do you have a better warranty (and in many cases, have a warranty at all), but you also know that the part shouldn't have any hidden wear on it that could affect the operation of the car. Obviously, you're not going to see used brake pads or anything like that. But you can buy used tires, for example, or even used brake pumps. Unless you're really familiar with the part, how it should look, and how easily it can wear down, for now, stick with new parts for anything safety-related.
Simple Structural Parts May Be Fine
However, simple structural parts could be fine. Need a side-view mirror for an older model of truck, where the mirror is stationary and not connected to the electrical system? A used part could be a perfect way to save money—not to mention a perfect way to find a vintage part if the truck model is old enough. A door panel, storage compartment door, and even an outer metal panel for the truck could be fine if bought used as long as the part is in excellent condition.
Do You Trust the Seller?
As with any vehicle repair or modification, you have to trust the seller enough to use the part without hesitation. If you're not sure if the seller is reputable or just have a bad feeling about using a used part, go get a new part—that's not a negative thing. You need to find a trustworthy seller with a good warranty or guarantee program for used parts just as you would any used item. However, sometimes a long search for a rare part can lead to compromises in standards, and you have to be sure that you don't compromise too much.
When used parts are in good condition and inspected to ensure there's no excessive wear or other troublesome issues, the parts can be a good way to save money while repairing your vehicle. However, new parts definitely have their advantages and in many cases are better choices right off the bat. If you're looking for truck parts, both used and new are available.
